Dynabrade  /  Model 68101  /  Technical Overview

Two-Stage Coolant Filtration System

The Dynabrade 68101 Coolant Filtration System collects, filters and recirculates coolant used in metal grinding, polishing and superfinishing operations. A self-priming centrifugal pump moves coolant through sequential 5-micron and 1-micron cartridges to reduce recirculated grinding residue before the fluid returns to the processing tool. This model is rated for 230 V, single-phase, 50 Hz power.

Equipment weight 103 lb (46.72 kg), without coolant
Mobility Four casters: two swivel and two rigid
Monitoring and protection Outlet pressure gauge, filter-housing air releases and ground-fault protection
Tank capacity versus operating fill: Dynabrade lists a 40 US gallon tank, while the setup manual specifies a maximum working fill of 25 US gallons. These are different figures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How the Filtration System Works

The machine uses a closed-loop coolant path with an intake strainer, centrifugal pump and two replaceable filtration cartridges connected in series.

  1. Used coolant returns to the tankThe machine returns spent coolant to the removable reservoir, where heavier solids can settle.
  2. Suction filter and centrifugal pumpCoolant passes through the suction filter before the self-priming centrifugal pump moves it through the circuit.
  3. Stage 1: 5-micron filtrationA disposable 5-micron cartridge removes a portion of the larger suspended particles before the fine filter.
  4. Stage 2: 1-micron filtrationA separate disposable 1-micron cartridge provides the final filtration stage.
  5. Filtered coolant returns to the toolThe filtered fluid travels through the 3/8-inch supply line to the processing machine for recirculation.

The 1-micron value is the manufacturer's stated final cartridge rating. An absolute capture-efficiency percentage is not specified in the referenced documentation.

Construction and System Features

  • Two replaceable filter housings: a 5-micron prefilter and a 1-micron final filter, each with a pressure-release valve.
  • Removable transparent tank: permits visual inspection of coolant level and access for sludge removal and cleaning.
  • Self-priming centrifugal pump: supplies filtered coolant to the connected processing equipment, after the pump casing has been properly filled for initial startup.
  • Pressure monitoring: an outlet pressure gauge helps indicate when filters require replacement.
  • Mobile frame: includes two rigid and two swivel casters to allow repositioning within the workshop.
  • Ground-fault protection: included in the documented system design.

Intended Applications

Designed for metal grinding, polishing and superfinishing processes that collect and recirculate machining coolant. Dynabrade's installation manual illustrates connection to a SuperFinisher and lathe arrangement. The receiving machine must have a compatible coolant supply connection and a suitable return path to the reservoir.

Coolant, Installation and Maintenance

Coolant Selection

Dynabrade recommends an oil-free synthetic machine and grinding coolant. Its manual describes a typical dilution of 4% to 5%. Confirm the correct mixture with the selected coolant manufacturer's instructions.

Initial Pump Priming

The centrifugal pump casing must be filled before first startup. The manual describes adding at least 1/2 US gallon during priming and warns that dry operation can damage the pump shaft and seal.

Filter Replacement Indicator

Record outlet pressure with clean cartridges. Dynabrade recommends replacing the filters after a 5 psi pressure drop from that initial reading. For example, a 12 psi baseline corresponds to replacement at 7 psi.

Tank and Sludge Maintenance

The manual instructs that accumulated sludge should not exceed 1 inch at the tank bottom. Drain and clean the reservoir as required, and replace both filter cartridges when carrying out the associated maintenance.

Electrical compatibility: Model 68101 is the 50 Hz version. The related Dynabrade 68100 is the 230 V, single-phase, 60 Hz version. Verify the installation's frequency, wiring, grounding and applicable electrical approval requirements before connecting power.

For indoor use with grinding or machining coolant only. Do not use with flammable or explosive fluids. Disconnect electrical power before servicing and follow all manufacturer safety instructions.
