Permanent marine adhesive and waterproof sealant

High-strength bonding above and below the waterline

3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 is a one-part, moisture-curing polyurethane designed for permanent marine bonding and sealing. It creates strong, flexible bonds between wood, gelcoat, fibreglass, and other marine materials while forming a watertight, weather-resistant seal around joints and boat hardware.

  • Black polyurethane
  • 3 fl oz squeeze tube
  • Above and below waterline
  • Permanent high-strength bond

Built for permanent marine assemblies

Marine structures move as they encounter vibration, impact, changing temperatures, and moisture. Once cured, 3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 forms a firm, rubbery bond that remains flexible enough to absorb stress caused by shock, vibration, swelling, and shrinking.

1

Permanent structural bonding

High-strength polyurethane provides durable assembly of wood, fibreglass, gelcoat, and other marine components.

2

Watertight protection

Forms a weather-resistant seal suitable for marine joints and hardware above and below the waterline.

3

Flexible under stress

The cured sealant helps dissipate stress produced by vibration, impact, movement, swelling, and shrinking.

4

Gap-filling, non-sag paste

The caulkable consistency fills irregular joints while resisting sagging or flowing in vertical and horizontal seams.

Recommended applications

  • Bonding fibreglass decks to fibreglass hulls
  • Permanent wood-to-fibreglass assembly
  • Installing portholes and deck fittings
  • Bonding motors to fibreglass transoms
  • Sealing hull seams above and below the waterline
  • Bonding mouldings, trunk joints, stern joints, and deck housings
  • Sealing between struts and planking

Compatible materials

3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 bonds many dissimilar marine materials. Test the complete substrate combination before use. Metals may require a suitable primer.

Fibreglass Gelcoat Wood Teak Glass Stainless steel Aluminum Brass Bronze Some plastics

Technical values are representative or typical only and are not intended for specification purposes. Cure time and working time vary with temperature, humidity, joint dimensions, substrate, and application conditions.

Application guidance

  • Remove wax, grease, oil, coatings, sealers, and other contamination before applying the sealant.
  • Abrading suitable surfaces with 180- to 200-grit abrasive before final cleaning can improve bond strength.
  • Do not use alcohol for surface preparation because alcohol can interfere with the moisture-curing reaction and cause bond failure.
  • Apply and tool the sealant before it skins or begins to cure. Working time decreases substantially in hot, humid conditions.
  • Use the opened tube within 24 hours after puncturing the inner seal.
  • Test metals to determine whether a suitable corrosion-resistant primer is required.

Important application limitations

3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 is intended for permanent assemblies. It should not be selected where routine disassembly or future hardware removal is expected.

Do not use it as a teak deck seam sealer. It is also not recommended as the sole attachment method for glass, polycarbonate, or acrylic windows without mechanical fastening. Test paint compatibility before coating the cured sealant, particularly with one-part solvent-based marine paints.

Storage and shelf life

  • Store in the original packaging at 16°C to 27°C (60°F to 80°F).
  • Maintain 40% to 60% relative humidity and protect from direct sunlight.
  • For best performance, use within 24 months of the manufacturing date.
  • Keep the container closed until use and store opened material according to the product label.

Important safety information

Danger: Harmful if inhaled and may cause allergic respiratory or skin reactions. The current Canadian Safety Data Sheet also identifies carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity hazards.

Obtain and review the current product label and Safety Data Sheet before use. Avoid breathing vapours, use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and wear the protective gloves and respiratory protection required by the workplace hazard assessment. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Can 3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 be used below the waterline?

Yes. It forms a watertight, weather-resistant seal suitable for properly prepared marine joints and hardware both above and below the waterline.

Is 3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 removable?

It is designed for permanent, high-strength assemblies and should not be selected where routine disassembly is required. For assemblies that may need to be taken apart, consider a marine sealant designed for non-permanent bonding.

How long does 3M™ Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 take to cure?

At 23°C (73°F), the typical tack-free time is approximately 12 hours and the typical cure rate is about 3 mm (1/8 in) every five days. Higher humidity can accelerate surface curing, while low temperature or humidity can extend cure time.

Can it bond metal or plastic components?

It adheres to many metals and some plastics, but compatibility must be tested. Metals may require a suitable primer, and windows made from glass, acrylic, or polycarbonate should also be mechanically fastened.
