3M™ Scotchcast™ Reenterable Electrical Insulating Resin 2123D is a flexible, two-part polybutadiene resin for protecting low-voltage cable splices and electrical assemblies. Its low viscosity and strong wetting characteristics help the mixed resin flow around components, fill enclosures, reduce voids, and form a soft seal that can later be removed for inspection, repair, or modification.

Mixing, curing, and storage

  • Keep the product sealed in its original envelope and mixing pouch until immediately before use.
  • In cold conditions, warm the closed pouch to at least 16°C (60°F) before mixing.
  • Premix each separated component, open the centre barrier, then move the resin back and forth for one minute.
  • Continue mixing until the colour is uniform, for no more than two additional minutes, then open a corner and pour as directed.
  • Do not energize the electrical system until the resin has hardened and is cool to the touch.
  • Store factory sealed at 10°C to 27°C (50°F to 80°F) and below 75% relative humidity.

Important electrical and chemical safety information

Danger: The current Canadian SDS classifies Part A as a respiratory sensitizer, skin sensitizer, and reproductive toxicant. Part B is classified as suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child. Obtain special instructions before use and do not handle the components until all safety precautions have been read and understood.

De-energize and ground electrical systems before installation. Use appropriate engineering controls, avoid breathing fumes, wear protective gloves and other personal protective equipment required by the SDS and workplace assessment, and store the product locked up. Dispose of contents and packaging according to applicable regulations.

Unlike a hard, rigid encapsulant, cured 2123 remains very soft and flexible. This allows a technician to remove the resin and access a protected splice or component for inspection, repair, or modification.

Can the resin be mixed and poured in cold weather?

The resin flows at low temperatures, but 3M instructs users to warm the unopened mixing pouch to at least 16°C (60°F) before mixing in cold weather. Keep it warm until ready to use and follow the pouch instructions.

Can the circuit be energized immediately after pouring?

No. The 3M pouch instructions state that the system must not be energized until the resin has hardened and is cool to the touch. De-energize and ground the system throughout installation and follow all applicable electrical safety procedures.
