A proven foam earplug for everyday hearing conservation

3M™ E-A-R™ Classic™ Earplugs are designed for dependable, economical hearing protection in busy industrial environments. Their initially firm foam supports easier roll-down and insertion, then softens and slowly expands to conform to the individual ear canal.

Slow-recovery foam

Gives the wearer time to insert the compressed plug before it fully expands inside the ear canal.

High attenuation rating

Provides a manufacturer-listed Noise Reduction Rating of 29 dB when properly fitted and used as directed.

Moisture resistant

Moisture-resistant foam helps maintain handling and fitting performance in demanding workplace conditions.

Fit-test compatible

Compatible with the 3M™ E-A-Rfit™ Validation System for individual hearing-protection fit testing.

Why facilities choose E-A-R Classic earplugs

  • Cylindrical foam shape creates a deep, secure roll-down fit
  • Softens after insertion and conforms to the ear canal
  • Uncorded design avoids cords around tools, equipment and clothing
  • Bright yellow colour supports quick visual identification
  • Pillow-packed pairs help keep earplugs clean and organised before use
  • One regular size is designed to fit most wearers
  • Suitable for hearing-conservation programs that include fit validation

Common applications

Designed for a broad range of industrial and maintenance tasks where workers are exposed to potentially hazardous noise.

Grinding Welding Sanding Machine operation Assembly Blasting Demolition Construction Metal fabrication Mining Oil and gas Facility maintenance
Best performance depends on fit: Even a high-rated earplug provides limited protection when it is not rolled down, inserted and sealed correctly.

How to fit roll-down foam earplugs
  1. Start with clean, dry hands. Inspect the earplug and do not use it if it is damaged, dirty or contaminated.
  2. Roll the entire earplug into a narrow cylinder. Use your fingers to compress the foam evenly without creating folds or creases.
  3. Reach over your head and pull the ear upward and back. This helps straighten the ear canal for deeper insertion.
  4. Insert the compressed plug promptly. Place it well into the ear canal while the foam is still compressed.
  5. Hold the earplug in position. Keep a fingertip on the end while the foam expands and forms a seal.
  6. Check the fit in both ears. The plugs should feel secure and outside noise should be noticeably reduced. Follow your employer's fit-check and training procedures.
Fitting reminder: Always follow the current 3M fitting instructions supplied with the product. Improper fitting can substantially reduce the protection achieved by the wearer.
NRR and real-world protection

The U.S. EPA Noise Reduction Rating is a laboratory-based attenuation value. The protection achieved by an individual wearer can be lower because of differences in ear shape, insertion depth, fitting skill, training and consistent use.

Important hearing-protection notice: 3M strongly recommends personal fit testing. Manufacturer guidance states that reducing the labelled NRR by 50 percent may provide a better estimate of typical protection, unless applicable regulations or site-specific guidance require another calculation method.

Hearing-protection selection should be based on a workplace noise assessment, applicable regulations, the required level of attenuation and the worker's verified fit. Excessive attenuation may also affect communication and situational awareness.

Frequently asked questions

Are these earplugs corded?
No. Product 310-1001 is the uncorded version of the 3M™ E-A-R™ Classic™ roll-down foam earplug.
How many pairs are included?
The manufacturer packaging lists 200 pairs per carton and 2,000 pairs per full case. Confirm the unit of sale shown on the product page before placing an order.
Can these earplugs be fit tested?
Yes. They are compatible with the 3M™ E-A-Rfit™ Validation System, which can help verify the personal attenuation achieved by an individual wearer.
Are the earplugs reusable?
No. They are classified by the manufacturer as disposable earplugs. Replace them when they become dirty, damaged, contaminated or no longer expand and seal correctly.
What does NRR 29 dB mean?
NRR 29 dB is the product's laboratory-rated Noise Reduction Rating. It does not guarantee that every wearer receives 29 dB of protection. Correct fitting, training, consistent use and personal fit testing are important.
What work environments are they intended for?
Common uses include grinding, welding, sanding, machine operation, assembly, construction, demolition, mining, transportation, metal fabrication and general industrial maintenance.
